Kedarnath is one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism — a Jyotirlinga (one of only 12 in all of India), a Char Dham site, and the most powerful Shiva shrine in the Himalayas. Located at 3,583 meters in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, it is accessible only 6 months a year when its doors (kapaat) open after winter.
The Kedarnath temple was built by the Pandavas and later renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. It survived the devastating 2013 floods almost untouched — believers say a large boulder diverted the floodwater around the temple, a miracle. Behind the temple, Adi Shankaracharya attained samadhi (liberation) in 820 AD — his samadhi sthal is still there.
The temple is surrounded by the Mandakini river, Chorabari glacier, and high Himalayan peaks. The experience of standing at the Kedarnath temple — with the sheer scale of the mountains above and the deep spiritual energy of the place — is something no human words can fully capture.

Early morning departure from Rishikesh in a Bolero or Tempo Traveller. Descend through the Garhwal foothills. Stop at Devprayag — where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers merge to form the sacred Ganga. Continue through Rudraprayag confluence (Alaknanda + Mandakini) — the river you will trace all the way to Kedarnath tomorrow. Arrive in Guptkashi by evening. Begin the 18 km ascent through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and glacial landscapes. Reach Kedarnath temple at 3,583m by afternoon. Attend the evening aarti — the sound of bells, the incense smoke rising against the mountains, and the divine energy of this place is beyond description. Overnight at Kedarnath.
Wake up at 4 AM for the Brahm Muhurta darshan — the most sacred time of the day, when Baba Kedarnath is awakened with special prayers, rudra abhishek, and aarti in the pre-dawn silence of the Himalayas. This moment — the deep bells, the ancient stone temple, the dark mountains — is what every pilgrim comes for. After breakfast, trek back down to Gaurikund and drive to Guptkashi for overnight stay.
Drive back to Rishikesh along the same beautiful mountain highway.
