About the Expedition

What Makes Mana Pass, Rimkhim & Lapthal Different

This isn't a typical Himalayan bike tour. Mana Pass, Rimkhim and Lapthal sit inside a restricted Inner Line Permit zone on the Indo-Tibet border in Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts - territory that's been militarily sensitive since the 1962 war and is patrolled by the ITBP and Indian Army. Almost no tour operator covers all three in one expedition.

You'll ride past Mana Village - the last village of India before Tibet - up the Saraswati and Alaknanda river valleys, through the historic Indo-Tibetan trade route at Niti Pass, into the alpine meadows of Rimkhim and the fossil-rich cold desert of Lapthal where the Himalayas themselves were born from the ancient Tethys Sea.

Mana Pass, Rimkhim & Lapthal - 3 Restricted Border Destinations

Each destination sits in the same Indo-Tibet border belt of the Niti Valley, but offers a completely different landscape and history.

1

Mana Pass

World's Highest Motorable Road

One of the highest vehicle-accessible passes on Earth at 5,610 m (18,400 ft). An ancient Indo-Tibet trade route, sealed since the 1962 war. Source of the mythical Saraswati river, near the Mahabharata-linked Bhim Pul and Vyas Cave at Mana Village.

Altitude: 5,610 m / 18,400 ft District: Chamoli Access: Mana Village → Gastoli → Pass
2

Rimkhim (Barahoti)

High-Altitude Alpine Meadow

Also called Barahoti or Hoti Plain - a vast, windswept alpine meadow at 14,500 ft in the remote Niti Valley. One of the least-visited high-altitude meadows in India, ringed by ITBP and Army border outposts.

Altitude: 14,500 ft District: Chamoli Terrain: Alpine meadow, grazing land
3

Lapthal

Cold Desert & Fossil Site

A breathtaking cold desert at 14,200 ft on the border of Chamoli and Pithoragarh, between the Niti and Johar valleys. Marine fossils from the ancient Tethys Sea are still found here - living proof of how the Himalayas were formed.

Altitude: 14,200 ft District: Chamoli / Pithoragarh border Famous for: Tethys Sea fossils

Mana Pass Permit 2026 - Complete Inner Line Permit Guide

Mana Pass, Rimkhim and Lapthal all fall inside the Inner Line Permit (ILP) zone. This isn't optional paperwork - without it, the Army won't let you past Mana Village.

Even with a valid ILP, the Indian Army can deny entry on the day depending on military exercises, border tension, or weather - this happens occasionally. Wander Sky times the itinerary and liaises with checkpoints to maximize your chances of a successful pass.

Step by Step

How to Get Mana Pass Permit - The Process

1

Register on the Chamoli ILP Portal

The Chamoli district administration runs an online portal for ILP applications to border areas including Mana Pass, Niti Pass and Rimkhim. Register with your mobile number and basic details.

2

Get Local Police Verification

Obtain a police verification or character certificate from the police station in your home city - the one where you've resided for the last 6 months. This must be arranged before you travel.

3

Arrange Medical Fitness Certificate

A medical certificate from a registered government hospital confirming you're fit for high-altitude travel is required, since the route crosses 14,000-18,400 ft terrain.

4

Upload Documents & Vehicle Details

Upload your ID proof (Aadhar/Passport), police verification, medical certificate, and vehicle RC + insurance. A notarised affidavit may also be required depending on current rules.

5

SDM Approval Forwarded to ITBP & Army

Once the SDM Joshimath office approves your application, it's forwarded to the ITBP and the Indian Army camp at the border for a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

6

Collect Permit & Report at Checkpoint

Collect your ILP from Joshimath (or download it online once approved). Reach the first Army checkpoint before 9 AM - the cutoff for vehicles moving up is 12 PM sharp.

Wander Sky Permit Assistance: Every Mana Pass, Rimkhim & Lapthal package includes complete permit handling. Send us your police verification certificate and ID proof after booking, and our local Joshimath team takes care of the SDM application, ITBP/Army NOC coordination, and checkpoint timing - so you just show up and ride.

Best Time for Mana Pass Bike Tour - Month-by-Month Guide

The riding window for Mana Pass, Rimkhim and Lapthal is narrow - the road is snow-bound for most of the year and only opens for a few months.

PeriodRoad & Weather ConditionTemperature RangeRecommendation
Mid-June – Mid-JulyFirst snow-clear window, road freshly opened2°C – 15°CBest — clearest skies, fresh meadows
Late July – AugustPeak monsoon, landslide risk on approach roads5°C – 18°CAvoid — high risk on Rishikesh-Joshimath stretch
SeptemberMonsoon clears, second riding window opens0°C – 12°CBest — stable roads, crisp mountain air
Early OctoberCold, early snowfall possible at the pass-5°C – 8°CRisky — road closure can happen with no notice
Late October – MayHeavy snow, road completely closedBelow -10°C at the passClosed — no civilian or military movement

June vs September - Which Window is Better?

Mid-June to mid-July gives you the freshest post-winter meadows and clearest views, but you're racing the monsoon's arrival. September is calmer and more predictable - the monsoon has cleared and the roads are more stable, though days are shorter and colder. Wander Sky's recommended window is the first two weeks of September.

What to Pack - Essential Checklist

  • Heavy thermal layers, riding jacket with windproof liner
  • Riding gloves rated for sub-zero temperatures
  • All permit documents in physical copies, plus 4-5 spares
  • Power bank, basic medicines, AMS tablets (consult doctor)
  • Full tank + extra fuel can - no fuel stations beyond Joshimath
  • No camera/mobile case needed beyond Mana - devices must be left behind
Eligibility

Who Can Ride to Mana Pass, Rimkhim & Lapthal?

This is not a beginner's ride. The combination of high altitude, restricted-zone protocol and rough terrain demands real preparation.

Riding Experience Required

Minimum 6 months of regular riding experience is recommended, ideally with some prior mountain or off-road exposure. The road beyond Mana Village is narrow, broken and unpaved in stretches. First-time riders should attempt an easier Himalayan route first.

Altitude & Health Considerations

At 18,400 ft, oxygen levels drop significantly. A medical fitness certificate is mandatory for the permit itself. Riders with heart, lung or chronic blood-pressure conditions should consult a doctor before booking. Acclimatization at Joshimath and Mana Village is built into the itinerary.

Document & Patience Requirement

Beyond riding skill, this expedition demands patience with bureaucracy - permit delays, checkpoint waiting, and possible last-minute Army denial are part of the experience. Riders who need a guaranteed, fixed itinerary should consider a non-restricted route instead.

Mana Pass, Rimkhim & Lapthal - Complete Planning Guides

Everything you need before you commit to this restricted border expedition.

Why This Ride Matters

Why Ride to Mana Pass, Rimkhim and Lapthal

This expedition offers something almost no other Himalayan ride can - genuine, untouched border territory.

Among the World's Highest Roads

Mana Pass at 5,610 m sits in the same league as the highest motorable passes on Earth - higher than most Ladakh passes, and far less crowded.

True Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most Himalayan bike tours go through Spiti or Ladakh, which now see thousands of riders every season. Mana Pass, Rimkhim and Lapthal see a fraction of that traffic.

Living History & Geology

Ride past Mana Village's Mahabharata legends, the sealed Indo-Tibet trade route at Niti, and Lapthal's million-year-old marine fossils - all in one trip.

Source of the Saraswati River

Stand at the spot where the mythical Saraswati river is believed to emerge near Mana Village - a place of deep spiritual and historical significance.

Full Permit Handling

The bureaucracy of Inner Line Permits, police verification and Army NOCs is the single biggest barrier to this trip. Wander Sky removes that barrier entirely.

Real Border Experience

This is one of the few places where civilians can legally ride right up to an active India-China border zone, under full ITBP and Army protocol.

All Questions Answered

Mana Pass, Rimkhim and Lapthal Bike Tour - Complete FAQ

Everything you need to know, answered in plain language, before you commit to this restricted border expedition.

Mana Pass sits at roughly 5,610 metres, which works out to about 18,400 feet above sea level. That places it among the highest stretches of motorable road anywhere on the planet. You'll find it in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, right on the Indo-Tibet border, around 47 km past Mana village.

Mana Pass falls inside an Inner Line Permit zone, so an ILP is non-negotiable. The SDM Office in Joshimath issues it, and the application also needs a No Objection Certificate from both the ITBP and the Indian Army. You'll need your ID proof, a police verification certificate from your hometown, a medical fitness certificate, and your vehicle's registration papers. Wander Sky manages this entire paperwork chain on your behalf.

Rimkhim, also called Barahoti, is a sweeping alpine meadow at 14,500 feet tucked inside the Niti Valley. Lapthal is a cold desert sitting at 14,200 feet, straddling the line between Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts, between the Niti and Johar valleys. Both lie within the same ITBP-monitored border belt along the Indo-Tibet frontier.

Your riding window is short: mid-June through mid-July, and then again in September. These are the stretches when snowmelt has cleared the road enough for vehicles to pass. Avoid late July and August, since monsoon rains bring a real landslide risk on the approach roads, and by late October the entire region locks under snow until the following summer.

Not really. This is a high-altitude expedition through a restricted military zone, and it rewards riders who already have at least six months of regular riding behind them. The road surface turns rough and narrow well before the pass, and weather can shift without warning. If you're new to riding, a gentler Himalayan route would be a better starting point.

No - holding a valid permit gets your foot in the door, but the final call rests entirely with the Indian Army on the day. Ongoing military drills, sudden weather changes, or border activity can mean entry gets turned down even with paperwork in order. Mana village itself needs no permit, but everything past it - Gastoli, Deo Tal, and the pass - requires the full ILP plus NOC.

A Royal Enfield Himalayan with fuel, six nights of hotel or camp accommodation, breakfast and dinner daily, complete permit and ILP handling, a backup support vehicle, on-route mechanic backup, and an experienced ride captain leading the group. Pricing begins at ₹38,999 per person.

Mana Pass remains accessible to civilians who hold an ILP, subject to the Army's discretion on the day. Niti Pass, by contrast, has stayed completely sealed since the 1962 war - nobody gets through. You can still ride into the surrounding Niti Valley villages of Malari, Niti, Dronagiri, and Lata, but the pass itself is off-limits.

Up to Mana village, photography is fine. Beyond that point - through Gastoli, Deo Tal, and on to the pass itself - cameras and mobile phones are strictly off-limits. You'll be asked to hand over your devices at the Army checkpoint before proceeding.

The complete expedition covering Mana Pass, Rimkhim, and Lapthal runs 7 days from Rishikesh. A shorter 5-day Express package covering only Mana Pass is also available. Either way, plan for at least 2 days of acclimatization around Joshimath and Mana village before pushing higher.
