Obtain a police verification or character certificate from the police station in your home city - the one where you've resided for the last 6 months. This must be arranged before you travel.
A medical certificate from a registered government hospital confirming you're fit for high-altitude travel is required, since the route crosses 14,000-18,400 ft terrain.
Upload your ID proof (Aadhar/Passport), police verification, medical certificate, and vehicle RC + insurance. A notarised affidavit may also be required depending on current rules.
Once the SDM Joshimath office approves your application, it's forwarded to the ITBP and the Indian Army camp at the border for a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Collect your ILP from Joshimath (or download it online once approved). Reach the first Army checkpoint before 9 AM - the cutoff for vehicles moving up is 12 PM sharp.

Mid-June to mid-July gives you the freshest post-winter meadows and clearest views, but you're racing the monsoon's arrival. September is calmer and more predictable - the monsoon has cleared and the roads are more stable, though days are shorter and colder. Wander Sky's recommended window is the first two weeks of September.
This is not a beginner's ride. The combination of high altitude, restricted-zone protocol and rough terrain demands real preparation.
Minimum 6 months of regular riding experience is recommended, ideally with some prior mountain or off-road exposure. The road beyond Mana Village is narrow, broken and unpaved in stretches. First-time riders should attempt an easier Himalayan route first.
At 18,400 ft, oxygen levels drop significantly. A medical fitness certificate is mandatory for the permit itself. Riders with heart, lung or chronic blood-pressure conditions should consult a doctor before booking. Acclimatization at Joshimath and Mana Village is built into the itinerary.
Beyond riding skill, this expedition demands patience with bureaucracy - permit delays, checkpoint waiting, and possible last-minute Army denial are part of the experience. Riders who need a guaranteed, fixed itinerary should consider a non-restricted route instead.

Delhi to Rishikesh is approximately 240 km (5-6 hrs by road), or take the Shatabdi Express to Haridwar and a short cab ride onward. Reach a day early to rest before the long ride to Joshimath begins.
Fly into Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (closest to Rishikesh, 35 km) or Delhi, then continue by road or train. Most riders fly in 1-2 days before the tour start date to acclimatize from the flight and arrange any last document.
Haridwar to Rishikesh is just 25 km - the easiest starting point. If you're sending your bike via train or carrier to attempt this route on your own machine, Haridwar railway station handles freight well.

Mana Pass sits at roughly 5,610 metres, which works out to about 18,400 feet above sea level. That places it among the highest stretches of motorable road anywhere on the planet. You'll find it in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, right on the Indo-Tibet border, around 47 km past Mana village.
Mana Pass falls inside an Inner Line Permit zone, so an ILP is non-negotiable. The SDM Office in Joshimath issues it, and the application also needs a No Objection Certificate from both the ITBP and the Indian Army. You'll need your ID proof, a police verification certificate from your hometown, a medical fitness certificate, and your vehicle's registration papers. Rimkhim, also called Barahoti, is a sweeping alpine meadow at 14,500 feet tucked inside the Niti Valley. Lapthal is a cold desert sitting at 14,200 feet, straddling the line between Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts, between the Niti and Johar valleys. Both lie within the same ITBP-monitored border belt along the Indo-Tibet frontier.
Your riding window is short: mid-June through mid-July, and then again in September. These are the stretches when snowmelt has cleared the road enough for vehicles to pass. Avoid late July and August, since monsoon rains bring a real landslide risk on the approach roads, and by late October the entire region locks under snow until the following summer.
Not really. This is a high-altitude expedition through a restricted military zone, and it rewards riders who already have at least six months of regular riding behind them. The road surface turns rough and narrow well before the pass, and weather can shift without warning. If you're new to riding, a gentler Himalayan route would be a better starting point.
No - holding a valid permit gets your foot in the door, but the final call rests entirely with the Indian Army on the day. Ongoing military drills, sudden weather changes, or border activity can mean entry gets turned down even with paperwork in order. Mana village itself needs no permit, but everything past it - Gastoli, Deo Tal, and the pass - requires the full ILP plus NOC.

Mana Pass remains accessible to civilians who hold an ILP, subject to the Army's discretion on the day. Niti Pass, by contrast, has stayed completely sealed since the 1962 war - nobody gets through. You can still ride into the surrounding Niti Valley villages of Malari, Niti, Dronagiri, and Lata, but the pass itself is off-limits.
Up to Mana village, photography is fine. Beyond that point - through Gastoli, Deo Tal, and on to the pass itself - cameras and mobile phones are strictly off-limits. You'll be asked to hand over your devices at the Army checkpoint before proceeding.
