Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain valley in the Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Its name in Tibetan means "The Middle Land" — a fitting description for a valley that sits geographically and culturally between India and Tibet. At an average altitude of 3,800–4,500 meters, it is one of the most remote and sparsely populated regions in the world.

Tabo Village · Altitude 3,050m
Called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas," Tabo Monastery is over 1,000 years old — founded in 996 AD. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously functioning monasteries in the world. Its nine temples contain some of the finest examples of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist art anywhere — intricate murals, stucco figures, and ancient manuscripts that have survived for a millennium.

Dhankar Monastery sits precariously on a narrow ridge of crumbling rock above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers — 1,000 meters above the valley floor. Founded in the 12th century, it served as the capital of the ancient Spiti Kingdom. The monastery's position, with views down to both rivers, is breathtaking and unlike any monastery view you will see anywhere in the world.

One of the best places in India to spot the rare and elusive snow leopard. Pin Valley National Park protects the cold desert ecosystem and is also home to Himalayan ibex, bharal (blue sheep), Tibetan wolf, and numerous migratory birds. The Pin river flows through stunning desert-like terrain. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed but the landscape alone makes it worth the visit.

Start your Spiti Valley journey from Chandigarh. Drive through Shimla — the charming colonial capital of Himachal Pradesh — and continue to Narkanda for the night. This is a gentle warm-up day through pine forests and apple orchards before the dramatic landscapes begin tomorrow.
Enter the Kinnaur Valley. Stop at Sarahan to visit the beautiful Bhimakali Temple — a blend of Hindu and Buddhist architecture. Continue to Kalpa, a stunning village with breathtaking views of the Kinner Kailash range. The landscape transforms dramatically today as you cross into Spiti. Visit Nako village and its beautiful lake. Then arrive at Tabo — home to the most important monastery in the Spiti Valley.
