Rapids are graded from I to VI based on how difficult they are. Rishikesh has Grade I to Grade IV rapids. Here is what each grade means for you.
Slow water with small waves. You just paddle forward and enjoy the view. Perfect for kids (14+), seniors, and first-timers who have never rafted before.
Brahmapuri Stretch (9km)
Bigger waves and some sharp turns. You need to paddle hard in sections. Still manageable for most people with no rafting experience. Great for groups and friends.
Shivpuri Stretch (16km)
Strong currents, big waves, and tricky turns. The raft can tilt and shake a lot. You need good fitness and should listen carefully to your guide's commands.
Marine Drive Stretch (26km)
Very powerful water with huge drops and nearly impossible obstacles. Rafts can flip. Only for experienced rafters with prior Grade III experience. Not for beginners at all.
Kaudiyala Stretch (35km)
Rishikesh rafting runs from September to June every year. The river closes in July and August because monsoon rains make the Ganges too dangerous. Here is what each season feels like on the water.
Post-monsoon water levels are ideal. Rapids are powerful but safe. Weather is cool and pleasant. This is the peak season — book in advance.
Water levels drop a bit. Rapids are still great. March and April are especially good. Crowds are lighter than October. Best time for budget travelers.
Very cold water (15–18°C). Wetsuits provided. Fewer tourists means more peaceful experience. Not recommended for people who are sensitive to cold.
Monsoon season. Ganges floods with dangerous water levels. Rafting is closed by government order. You can still book bungee jumping, camping, and other activities.
